J12 made us a yummy-scrummy rhubarb crumble for dessert. He picked the rhubarb and cooked it in a little water until it went all mushy. No need for added sugar! (In fact, we never add sugar to any of our stewed fruit.)

I had him dictate the instructions for making the topping as I just throw it all together until it looks right and don’t worry about measurements. As it turned out, he doesn’t measure things either and kept saying “until it looks right”. We took out the until-it-looks-rights, he guesstimated the quantities and we came up with this:

Soften 75g or so of butter
Mix in about 1/2C flour with your hands
Add roughly 1/2C brown sugar and easily 1 1/2C rolled oats
Mix it all together until it’s crumbly and looks right (oops, one still made it)
Sprinkle over the top of stewed fruit and bake at 180°C for about half an hour

If you don’t have rhubarb, this works equally well with apples or pears or peaches or apricots or even a mixture of all the above and a few dried fruits as well (maybe prunes or dates or sultanas).
